Personal Summary of the Leadership Development Camp
By,
Kieran Nirula

The American Red Cross's Leadership Development Camp (LDC) is a wonderful experience for students. An enriching leadership experience, the LDC provides an excellent source of learning and growth for its delegates and, in the process, positively influences their lives. The many friendly and supportive staff members and the extensive and structured curriculum of the camp allow young delegates to learn and grow together in a positive, safe environment, as well as to experience the camp in fun and exciting ways.

The LDC helps its delegates to grow as leaders by placing an emphasis on cooperation. Gatherings of small groups of students throughout the week of the camp provide opportunities for them to openly share their diverse opinions in a safe environment. This activity helps students to open their minds to the values and feelings of others and, in doing so, enables them to effectively consider their followers' opinions while leading. During other activities in the camp, such as sports, games, and work sessions, students work together in groups of eight or nine people to accomplish a common goal. In these activities, the delegates learn to both lead and follow within their groups, make their opinions heard, and work together despite their many differences in opinions and values. These are all important tools for students to have as they progress through life and take on leadership roles in their community.

Yet another of the LDC's activities involves the assembly of all of the delegates to take part in learning about leadership styles and methods from staff members. The camp director, Skip Morgan, conducts these assemblies and teaches his students about effective and ineffective approaches to leading, and in doing so he helps the camp delegates to improve their leadership qualities. Finally, the LDC contributes to the growth of its delegates by inviting several motivational speakers who serve in leadership positions to speak to the students, such as company presidents and volunteer participants. By speaking in the camp, these influential people help the delegates to learn the aspects of leadership that are necessary for them to follow in their footsteps.

The LDC is an excellent learning opportunity for students interested in improving their leadership qualities. By participating in the camp, delegates will learn to work in a group and manage a balance between being a leader and a follower. They will also be taught how to be successful leaders by utilizing certain styles and methods of leadership. Finally, delegates of the LDC will grow by learning to integrate others' opinions into the decisions of the groups they lead by becoming more open-minded and respectful towards a wide range of diverse values and feelings.
